I grew up in the urban landscapes and ocean of San Pedro Bay. After studying at Columbia University, I returned to the coast, mountains, deserts, and rivers of the West. Since 2009, I've taught history to college students from varied backgrounds and authored two award-winning research articles.

As a historian and professor, I teach courses on the Civil War era, California and the West, and US survey to students from varied backgrounds. My articles have won awards from the Western History Association, Historical Society of Southern California, and American Society for Environmental History. I believe the past is our common ground, giving purpose to the present.
